Unfolding the Contents of Realistic Forms: Expression, Distortion, Statement (Online Course) Fall 2022

Course Description:

In this course one will have the possibility to learn a gradual, stepwise approach to creating complex, realistic and expressive graphical works using charcoal and soft pastels. We will discuss multiple aspects of self-expression, method, quality of line and overall mission and statement of a work. The focus will be on a human figure, furniture elements and the space surrounding them. Both dynamics and statics of forms will be analyzed. The course will have both theoretical and practical parts along with constant discussion of the process.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1 – Introduction to contemporary graphics, canons, key artists, key elements, composition, the message behind the works

Lesson 2 – Facing the blank paper, line propagation on the paper, filling the space, manipulating the empty space, creating the environment for a future figure/object, adding the secondary elements objects

Lesson 3 – Working with colors, combining colors and textures, practicing color fading, basic color combinations, understanding the purpose of color in a drawing

Lesson 4 – Adding distortion and abstract elements, extending the realistic features, adding layers and noise, adding controlled expression and emotions, understanding when to stop

Lesson 5 – Finalizing the drawing, finishing touches, discussing the objectives reached, what could be removed added. Does the final image match my inner vision?
